Q: What's the best way to look after paddles? A: Some basic tips to help you look after your outrigger, dragon boat or stand up paddle:
- With proper care, your carbon fibre paddle will last for years.
- Always protect your paddle from direct sunlight when it is not in use.
- A paddle bag provides the best overall protection from ultraviolet light.
- Never drive your paddle into the sand
Treat your paddle with respect. Dings, dents and scrapes shorten the life of you paddle. A paddle bag is an inexpensive way to keep your paddle in top condition. Mark your paddle so that you can find it. Unique stickers, designs or our initials on the handle make it easy to find your paddle.
Q: Are SUP (stand up paddling or surfing) boards only for waves? A: No. SUP is a fun way to explore rivers and lakes and an excellent core body workout. As you are much higher off the water than a surfboard or surfski, visibility is far greater both above and below the water. Open water distance paddling is a sport in it's on right with many races held worldwide over various distances.
Q:Can I buy a paddle and use my Longboard to SUP? A: No. You will find your standard Mal too small for SUP. SUP boards are generally between 10' and 12'6". Most are between 28 and 32 inches wide and about 4-5 inches thick. They have increased volume that make the board a lot more stable and easier to stand and paddle on.
Q:What type of paddle do I need? A: You will need a one bladed paddle with a t-bar at the top. The paddle should not be too long or short. An ideal paddle length would be when the paddle is standing vertically with the handle on the ground the base of the blade should be at eye level. There are various constructions for paddles. The best is carbon as it is the lightest and stiffest. An aluminium shaft paddle with a plastic blade is the cheaper option, although they flex a little they are still a great option especially when learning.
